Green Buildings
With university campuses striving to be at the forefront of progress, many schools are considering green building design when updating or expanding their campus. The term “green buildings” is a general reference to buildings that were built with the environment in mind. Green buildings are designed to have the least amount of environmental impact possible. Construction of these buildings takes into account site impact, water and energy use, materials, and the health of occupants. There are a number of environmentally conscious architects, contractors, and suppliers who can help a university build a new building or plan a green remodel. There is also a certification process to recognize the level to which a building is environmentally sustainable. This is LEED certification. While your campus may decide that certification is not appropriate for your situation, the process and guidelines do set the bar for environmentally sustainable buildings.
