Electronics Tips
- Turn off/ Unplug - Many large electronics are on 24/7, which both wastes energy and wears them down. Encourage administrators to establish a policy of shutting off printers, copiers, computers, etc. over night and especially during vacation. It is also important to note that even when an appliance is switched off it is still drawing (and thus wasting) energy if it is plugged in. In dorms, appliances like TVs, coffee pots, and individual refrigerators can all be unplugged when not in use.
- Sleep mode - Sleep mode is an internal energy saving control on computers, printers, and copiers. In libraries, computer labs, offices, and personal use, all of these electronics should be set to “sleep” after 10 minutes of being idle. NOTE: Using a screen-saver is not the same thing as a sleep mode; screen-savers do not reduce the energy use of an appliance.
- Maintenance - Keeping appliances in as good of condition as possible is the best way to reduce their energy waste when turned on. Specifically, refrigerator coils and lint traps in clothes driers should be cleaned regularly to keep these appliances running efficiently.
- Full loads - Doing full loads of laundry and dishes conserves lots of energy. Allowing your dishes and clothing to dry in the sun is even better.
ENERGY STAR (www.energystar.gov)
ENERGY STAR is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) designed to help consumers “save money and protect the environment through energy efficient products and practices.” The ENERGY STAR program rates thousands of products and certifies those that use less energy than comparable models without the ENERGY STAR label. The program produces and sells many products, and has a search engine for local retailers. Encouraging your fellow students and your school to buy ENERGY STAR whenever they make an appliance purchase is a great way to help you green your campus.
